Persinette - Embroidered Linen Folk Wall Clock - Limited collaboration piece
This one-of-a-kind embroidered wall clock was created through collaboration between hand embroiderer Laura Mason and illustrator Heidi Burton.
The illustration for this clock was inspired by the fairytale Persinette by Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de la Force, originally published in 1698, and later adapted by the Grimm Brothers into the folktale Rapunzel.
Heidi: My illustration work is inspired by folktales, nature, and the characters I observe in day-to-day life. I earned an Illustration degree in 2007 and have been working as a freelance illustrator ever since. [link]
Laura: I was traditionally trained in hand embroidery during a three year apprenticeship at the Royal School of Needlework, graduating in 2005. Since then I have been creating one of a kind contemporary embroidered pieces, using the techniques that I was trained in.
The illustration was of course a challenge, but a welcome one. Many samples were worked for not only determining the best way of transferring the design but also how to replicate the illustration itself. The fine lines of the face and hair were worked in a combination of back stitch, and split using from as fine as machine cotton up to a couple of stranded cotton threads. Overall the design took over seventy hours to stitch and I enjoyed every minute of it. You can follow the process via my blog at www.lmdesigns.blogspot.com.
